(아하 영어상식) With Compliments (무료로 제공되는)

호텔 등에 가면 생수 물병에 With Compliments 라는 라벨이 붙어있는

것을 가끔 볼 수 있습니다.

 

뜻은 "무료로 제공되는" 의 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

 

 

compliment 라는 단어를 찾아보면 

 

"a polite expression of praise or admiration"

즉, "칭찬, 존경, 감사" 정도의 의미입니다.

 

어디에도 "무료" 라는 의미는 없습니다.

 

 

그런데, with compliments 라고 하면 "감사한 마음으로, 감사의 의미로" 와 같이 되어,

이게 즉, "무료로 제공되는" 의 뜻이 되어 버린 것입니다.

 

 

compliment 의 형용사 complimentary 의 경우는 사전에 "무료의", "칭찬하는" 라고 해석하고 있습니다.

complimentary 에는 분명히 free 의 의미가 들어가 있네요.
