하는 편이 낫다 may as well, might as well, be better off, had better, had best, would rather

비슷한데 볼때마다 헷갈리는 may as well 구문 ... 어떤때는 might as well 도 있어서 헷갈립니다.

결론부터 말하자면, 같은 뜻 입니다.

 

may as well

= might as well

= be better off

= had better

= had best

= (위 두개는 짧게 better, best 만 달랑 쓰기도 함)

≒ would rather (이건 엄밀히 말하면 "더 좋아한다(prefer, care for)" 이지만, 고거이 고거~ 비스무리꾸리~)

 

 

모두 "~ 하는 편이 낫겠다. ~하는게 좋을걸" 라는 뜻입니다.

물론 구문에따라, 뉘앙스에따라 보다 더 자연스럽게 어울리는 것들이 있을겁니다. 같은 말이라도 잘 쓰는 표현이 있고, 잘 안쓰는 표현이 있으니까요. 그런것까지는 미국인이 아니고서야 알기 어렵고~~

일단은 해석은 모두 같다는 것 ^^

better off 는 또 다른 뜻  "부유한" 으로도 많이 사용됩니다.

 

better off

= well off

= rich

 

We are better off than we used to be.

우리는 예전보다 잘 살고 있다.

 

It is the only way to be better off.

그게 더 부자가 되는 유일한 길이다.
